Wika Thermocouples

Temperature sensors called thermocouples produce a voltage that is inversely proportional to temperature. They are particularly well adapted for high temperatures up to 1,700 °C as compared to resistance thermometers. Depending on the instrument type, sensor element, and wetted materials, instrument designs made from mineral-insulated sheathed cable can withstand levels of vibration that would otherwise destroy other materials. The accuracy grades 1 and 2 according to IEC 60584 as well as the standard and special classes according to ASTM E230 are applicable to thermocouples.

Specifications

Thermocouples in this series can be combined with a large number of thermowell designs. Use without a thermowell is permitted when using a fixed (welded) fitting.

A wide variety of possible combinations of sensor, connection head, insertion length, neck length, connection to thermowell etc. are available for the thermometers; suitable for almost any thermowell dimension.

Applications

  • Plastics and rubber industry
  • Hot runner bushings and nozzles
  • Hot runner manifolds
  • Moulds used in injection moulding machines
  • For direct installation into the process

Special features

  • Exclusion of potential faults during installation and operation in hot runner systems thanks to plasticencapsulated transition
  • The thermocouple can be installed without any fixing through bending or forming the sheathed cable or with a rotatable (if required, spring-loaded) union screw
  • Probe diameter 0.5 ... 3.0 mm [0.020 ... 0.118 in]
  • Kapton®, as the industry standard insulating material for connection cables

Specifications

The TC46 series thermocouples are custom-designed to suit all applications where sheathed thermocouples are required. An extensive range of elements, transition sleeves and process connections can be individually selected for the appropriate application. With the flexibility and small diameters in which they are available, model TC46 thermocouples can be used in locations that are not easily accessible.

Thanks to their unique design, the hot runner thermocouples are especially suited for applications where the metal sensor tip is fitted directly into a drilled hole or press-fitted into a grooved channel along the machined parts.

In the standard version the thermocouples are manufactured without process connections. Fastening elements such as a union screw, a compression fitting, or a spring-loaded or customer-specific hold down device can be attached and are available as options.

Applications

  • Plastics and rubber industry
  • Hot runner manifolds for injection mould machines
  • Injection moulding tools

Special features

  • Application range up to 400 °C [752 °F]
  • Thermocouple cable standard with glass-fibre insulation and stainless steel braid
  • Thermocouple type J or K in accordance with IEC 60584 or ASTM E230
  • The manifold thermocouple is a low profile design
  • Interchangeable and easily replaceable

Description

The TC47-MT manifold thermocouple is a general purpose temperature sensor designed to suit all applications where medium to low profile temperature detection is required. The thermocouple is designed to sense temperature where the metal sensor tip is fitted directly into a drilled hole.

The manifold thermocouple is held in place with a screw. This allows the sensor to have positive pressure at the tip when installed correctly. Due to the construction design, these sensors can be applied in areas that have a harsh environment and difficult to reach.

Applications

  • Plastics and rubber industry
  • Nozzle extensions on injection mould machines
  • Manifolds for injection mould machines
  • Compression platens
  • Packaging

Special features

  • The sensor is fixed with a pre-determined threaded bolt and mounted into the process
  • The nozzle thermocouples are a low profile in design
  • Extension cable is available in a variety of insulation and jacketed materials. These include fibreglass, PTFE or PVC to name a few.
  • With or without stainless steel overbraid
  • Interchangeable and easily replaceable

Description

The TC47-NT nozzle thermocouple is a general purpose temperature sensor designed to suit applications where low profile temperature detection is required. The thermocouple sensor is designed to sense temperature in a pre-determined threaded hole.

The nozzle thermocouple is held in place with a threaded bolt. This allows the sensor to have a positive pressure at the tip when installed correctly. Due to the construction design, these sensors can be applied in areas that have a harsh environment that need a good positive securing method.

Applications

  • Tanks
  • Reactor shells
  • High-pressure and high-temperature reactors
  • Coke drums and shells
  • Hydrocracker units

Special features

  • Simplified maintenance and sensor removal without the use of specialised tools
  • Maximum surface contact tip design
  • High-temperature applications (up to 540 °C [1,000 °F])

Description

The magnetic thermocouple is designed as a non-welded option for vessel wall temperature measurement. The circular magnet design incorporates an insulation barrier from radiant heat along with a sensor tip designed to maximise surface contact to ensure accurate temperature measurement.

The neck extension can be manufactured to length based on insulation thickness. The spring-loaded neck extension ensures sensor contact with the vessel wall and allows for maintenance without the use of tools above the insulation/cladding of the vessel.

Applications

  • Gasification reactors
  • GtL reactors (Gas-to-Liquids)
  • Sulphur recovery plants

Special features

  • 3 times longer service life in comparison to purely ceramic protection tubes due to the monocrystalline structure of the sapphire sensor
  • High process safety with processes up to 1,700 °C [3,092 °F] and 65 bar [943 psi]
  • Reduction of unplanned downtime
  • Increased safety through double sealing system against escape of toxic media
  • Cost savings through the elimination of a purge system and the repairability of the sensor

Description

This high-temperature thermocouple with a gas-tight sapphire protection tube has been specifically developed for use in gasification reactors. Through the monocrystalline structure, the sapphire protects the precious metal of the thermocouple from poisonous toxic media in the aggressive
atmosphere of the gasification reactor.

This solution has been used successfully in different reactors worldwide since 1997 under the designation model T-FZV. Hermetically sealed, pressure-tight junctions between the sapphire and metal protection tube, and also a multifold sealing system in the connection housing prevents toxic
gases from being able to escape the reactor.

The high temperatures and pressures in the gasification process place very high demands on protection tubes and thermocouples. These process conditions often lead to shutdowns and interruptions in operation. Utilizing the patented sapphire design can significantly improve life expectancy and reduce downtime.
